The Wine Controversy:  High Alcohol Level Wines & Your Health

As the popularity of wine grows in the U.S., there has been a steady demand for vintages with excessively high alcohol content. Although many wine connoisseurs view high-alcohol level wines with distain, these punch-packing vintages certainly have a fan-base.

In fact, in a recent Wall Street Journal article waxed poetic about the merits of high alcohol wines. Yet according to wine connoisseur and world renowned Immunologist, Dobri Kiprov, M.D., those statementsare not only misleading—but also potentially dangerous.

Dr. Kiprov, who is the producer and director of the educational DVD, Wine Fundamentals, often recommends certain wines to his patients for their antioxidants and numerous health benefits. However, he explains that high alcohol level wines can have just the opposite effect.   “The benefits of wine are indisputable,” Dr. Kiprov explains.  “I recommend the moderate consumption of wine, generally one or two glasses with food per day. However the wines that I recommend are known as table wines, which contain low alcohol-levels.”

According to Dr. Kiprov, it is often over-looked that “table wines” are low-alcohol level, generally limited to a maximum of 14% alcohol, for good reason. According to a recent statement by The American Heart Association, consuming too much alcohol can raise the levels of some fats in the blood, known as triglycerides. It may also lead to high blood pressure, increased calorie intake and in some cases cardiac arrhythmia and heart failure.

Dr. Dobri Kiprov states: “There is no need to abstain from drinking wines; they can be both enjoyable and beneficial. People need to educate themselves to the benefits of low alcohol wines and of course, enjoy them responsibly.”

About Dr. Kiprov:   Dr. Dobri Kiprov, MD, HP is Chief of Immunotherapy at California’s Pacific Medical Center and San Francisco. He is also the creator and producer of Lifestyle In Motion, a revolutionary health program, which offers invaluable medical insights on the healing powers of food, boosting your immune system, controlling your weight and preventing disease.
